Fluid friction apparatus FLUID MECHANICS Page 1/1 - KCFM-142/DL : 05 Description The present set-up is designed to study the friction head losses through pipes, fittings, and flow metering devices. Four different ID sizes smooth pipes and one artificially roughened pipe is connected in parallel. A valve arrangement is provided to operate the one pipe at a time. Various types of fitting are also fitted with pressure taps to conduct the experiment. Venturi meter, orifice meter and pitot tube also accompanies the set-up. To measure the pressure difference across the each fitting, pressure taps are taken to manometer with help of non-spill quick release couplings. Present set-up is self-contained water re-circulating unit, provided with a sump tank, centrifugal pump etc. Water is pumped by means of centrifugal pump and passing through the selected test sections, it returns back to the sump which make the system re-circulating type. Flow control valve and by-pass valve are fitted in water line to conduct the experiment on different flow rates. Flow rate of water is measured with the help of flow sensor fitted in water line. The supplied set-up is complete in all respect. Only water supply and electricity supply is to be provided by the end user for running the set-up. The present set-up has a facility to interface the system with computer which enables to log the experimental data using computer. The educational software and data-logging package has been developed for unit. The software environment base is of Labview of NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS, USA. This software is compatible to interfacing unit designed by K. C. Engineers. This software package provides a comprehensive educational software environment within which the investigations can be performed. This software is capable to tabulate the sample readings according to the requirement of experiment under study and results obtained can be compared. The real time data acquisition can be done by interfacing the set-up with computer using software. Software allows the user to have control on data logging, printing the stored data, preparing spread sheets in Excel etc.
Experimentation/Learning Objectives • Confirming the relationship between head loss due to fluid friction and velocity for flow of water. • To determine the head loss associated with flow through pipe fittings. • To determine the relationship between pipe friction coefficients and Reynolds' number for flow through a pipe with roughened bore. • To study the differential head devices for measurement of flow rate and velocity.
Utilities Required • Electricity supply: Single Phase, 220 V AC, 50 Hz, 5-15 Amp. combined socket with earth connection. Earth voltage should be less than 5 volts. • Water Supply: Initial Fill. • Floor Drain Required. • Floor Area Required: 3 m x 1.0 m. • Computer System: i-3 processor with DVD Drive, Windows 7/8, MS-Office pre-loaded. One USB slot required in PC for Data Acquisition Card.
